Chuggington Videos

In the town of Chuggington are 3 young novice railway locomotives (‘trainees’) Koko, Wilson, and Brewster. The trainees (and sometimes the more experienced Chuggers, chuggineers) learn the value of loyalty, friendship, telling the truth, listening carefully, persisting under adversity, completing tasks, resolving conflict without violence, and similar values. The locomotives, called “Chuggers”, are intelligent, empathetic, independent and somewhat self-directed. Chuggers regularly rely on human’s for maintenance and interaction.

best music theory books for beginners

Which music theory books best for you to buy? In I review what I feel are four of the best books to learn music theory that I’ve used to teach all levels from kids, children, beginners, advanced and degree level students throughout my own teaching career.

Best books to learn Music theory

Everyone studies music theory for different reasons so I’ve decided to look at four books which I feel will serve students of all different levels.

1. The AB Guide To Music Theory Parts 1 and 2

These two books are perfect if you’re new to theory and you need to learn the basics. The explanations are clear and the material is really well presented. If you’ve read these books then you won’t draw a blank the next time someone asks you “hey, what key is this song in?”. It’s crucial reading for any student.

2. Mark Levine’s Jazz Theory Book

This second option is more advanced and I would say better suited to students in degree programs or serious high school students. Jazz theory helps to explain so many areas of contemporary music like pop, soul, R&B to name a few. So understanding how to improvise over changes, how certain scales relate to certain chords and how to reharmonize (all of which you learn in this book) is something you really have to know.

3. Harmony by Walter Piston

If classical music is much more your thing then Harmony by Walter Piston is the book for you. Whilst this does cover some very fundamental things like intervals, key signatures and triads, Harmony also progresses into very advanced territory by the end. For this reason, it’s one of the most complete books I’ve ever read. It also comes with a sister workbook which has exercises for each chapter.

4. David Berkman’s Jazz Harmony Book

This is one of my favourite books. It’s got endorsements from some of the biggest names in jazz but it presents the process of understanding and applying harmony perhaps more clearly than any other book I’ve ever read. My favourite section is the appendix at the back which teaches non-piano players how to voice all the chords and theory you learn as a jazz piano player would. Basic keyboard skills are taught at any serious music school to every student without exception so if you’re a student or even a professional then this is a book you must own!

Can You Play Bass with A Pick

In this lesson we’ll be discussing how to play bass with a pick. How to use a pick or plectrum to play bass is something that is a hot debate for many all the way from beginners to advanced bassists. And what constitutes correct bass picking technique is a huge part of that debate. Everyone you speak to seems to have a different opinion on how to hold the pick and how to use it. Having so much conflicting advice often leaves us a little confused when we’re trying to develop our technique. We’ve all been there and it’s a really difficult position to be in.

Can You Play Bass with A Pick

I’d like to take this opportunity to give my input on a few issues regarding pick bass playing. Below are a few common questions I get asked;

1. Can you play bass with a pick? – Yes you can. Using a plectrum just gives your bass a different sound. Whilst the use of a plectrum isn’t the most common technique, many bass players throughout the history of the instrument have created some truly great music using a pick.

2. Bass pick vs fingers. Is it ok to play bass with a pick? – Of course it is. There is a little bit of a stigma about using a pick rather than your fingers to play bass but this is mostly just a matter of preference. I’ve never seen any reason why bass players can’t use a pick.

3. Who can I listen to so I can hear some great examples of bass players who use a pick? – I would say you have to check out Bobby Vega, Carol Kaye, Steve Swallow and Paul McCartney. There have been many more great players who use a pick but these guys have written some memorable music with this technique. Put any of their names into Google and you’ll find records they’ve played on.

Rock

Heyzeus is an earthy, alternative rock group from the UK.

With nostalgic flavours of Nirvana, Oasis, Gomez and Jeff Buckley, the listener is thrown forwards and backwards through musical history to modern day.

The band first formed when drummer Jessica-Louise, saw Frontman Jamie Andrew on an ITV1 Saturday night tv show. Jess took to the internet to hunt Jamie down, and travelled from the edge of Scotland to come and meet Jamie in his hometown of Tunbridge Wells. The 2 instantly hit it off, with Jessica becoming Jamie’s biggest fan, following and supporting him on his nomadic busking adventures around the globe.

After a successful trip to Los Angeles, and scoring some credible gigs at the famous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Jess teamed up musically with Jamie, to form a duo, performing as an acoustic 2 piece, with a guitr/cajon setup.

From there, the pair recorded their first live and unplugged album, ‘Unplugged’, before touring it across the streets of Europe. One night of inspiration in Milan, brought the idea that Jess should learn the drums, which allowed the option of an electric fuelled band. Subsequently, they recorded their debut full band EP ‘Honey Liquor’.

Singer Jamie Andrew has busked all over the world, performing his songs on some of the worlds most famous streets. ‘The Great Big Busk’, an epic 2 year busking trip around the world, took Jamie through the streets of Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Jamie Hitch-hiked, couchsurfed and busked his way around the clock, writing many hit songs and evolving his craft along the way.

With their captivating energy, blissful melodies, powerful rock drumming, and riffy guitrs; it’s unanimous to say, Heyzeus must be seen live! X
